Blue Jacket Loop Trail

Meadows of goldenrod and thistle, deep woods, scenic overlook (Shawnee Lookout) This trail, named after Chief Blue Jacket of the Shawnee Indians has a lovely blend of wood and meadow. In the summer, the goldenrod and thistle in the meadows draw monarch butterflies, and the slippery elm, sugar maple, and other trees provide great colors in the fall. There are signs throughout the trail describing wildlife as well as benches to rest on in the scenic areas. Shawnee Overlook is about half-way through the trail, and the benches invite hikers to sit and appreciate the view of the Great Miami River and the hills of southwestern Indiana (the barely-visible highway is only a minor intrusion). About half of the trail is gravel so walking is easy, but the loud crunching of my feet on the path scared away any potential wildlife spottings. This is a heavily-traveled trail, perfect for families with younger children. This short trail is perfect for locals or vacationers looking for a liesurely stroll through the woods.
