About

Shelter Island is situated in the Alexander Archipelago of southeast Alaska, positioned between Favorite and Saginaw channels. It was named in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade of the United States Navy and was first observed by European explorer Joseph Whidbey during George Vancouver's expedition in the 1790s. The island features rugged terrain and lush vegetation, reflecting the natural beauty of Alaska's coastal landscapes. Outdoor activities on Shelter Island include kayaking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Due to its remote location, access is primarily by boat, so plan your trip accordingly. Weather conditions in this region can change rapidly, making it important to prepare for varying temperatures and precipitation. Always confirm hours, fees, and any potential closures with the official state agency before your visit.
