About
Spanning the loess bluffs of southwestern Mississippi near Natchez, Homochitto National Forest preserves nearly 192,000 acres of deep, erosion-carved ravines and rolling hills draped in mixed hardwoods and pines. The forest is a Civilian Conservation Corps restoration success story, with 1930s-era CCC workers transforming severely eroded cotton farmland back into thriving woodland through terracing, tree planting, and soil conservation practices still visible in the landscape today. Clear Springs Recreation Area, the forest's primary developed facility, offers a spring-fed lake for swimming and fishing, surrounded by towering loblolly pines.\n\nThe unique loess soil -- windblown silt deposited thousands of years ago by glacial outwash -- creates a distinctive terrain of steep-sided ravines that support rare plant communities adapted to the cool, moist microclimate of the shaded bluff faces. The forest provides important habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and the endangered Louisiana black bear, which has been expanding its range into southwestern Mississippi. Homochitto's network of forest roads and trails supports hunting, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and a growing mountain biking community, while its proximity to the Natchez Trace Parkway and the antebellum heritage of Natchez makes it an attractive stop for cultural and nature tourism.
