About

Fort Lane State Heritage Site is situated in southern Oregon, near Gold Hill. Established in the mid-19th century, this site served as a military outpost during the Rogue River Wars and is named after Captain John Lane. Its historical significance lies in its role in the interactions between the U.S. Army and local Native American tribes. The site features interpretive trails and remnants of the fort, allowing visitors to explore and learn about this important period in Oregon's history. Visitors can hike along the interpretive trails that highlight the area's history and natural beauty. The site is relatively remote, offering a peaceful experience in nature; however, it is important to plan ahead, as amenities are limited. Parking is available on-site, and visitors should be ready for varying weather conditions. There is no water access, so bringing your own water is advisable. As conditions and access may change, please confirm hours, fees, and closures with the official state agency before your visit.
