The BLM Campbell Tract is a 730-acre Special Recreation Management Area located in the heart of Alaska’s largest urban area and provides outdoor recreation opportunities in a non-motorized natural setting for more than 500,000 visitors annually. The 25-mile trail system winds through the woods, providing year-round recreation opportunities on unpaved trails that link to the adjacent 4000 acre Far North Bicentennial Park trail network. Popular activities in summer include walking, running, mountain biking, orienteering, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Popular winter activities include snowshoeing, fat tire biking, skijoring, and cross-country skiing.Pursuant to Federal Register Notice and 43 CFR 2920.1, 5462.2, 8341.1, 8351.2, 8360.0-7 and 8365.1-2; the following activities are prohibited on Campbell Tract:Use of motorized vehicles except on designated roadsUse of firearms, air guns, paint guns, archery equipment, traps, fireworks, or snaresDogs and domesticated animals not on a leash; physical restraints or electronic collars are requiredCamping, building of fires, building structures/shelters, or the consumption of alcoholConstructing trailsUse of dog mushing wheeled carts or vehicles during snow free seasonPublic or private entry onto the Campbell Tract airstrip, heliport, aircraft ramp, and taxiway between the airstrip and the aircraft ramp areasDuring the winter, trails are groomed to allow for both classic and skate skiing. The main access point for Campbell Tract is the Smokejumper Trailhead, which is located off Elmore Road. Access is also available at the Campbell Airstrip Trailhead, located off Campbell Airstrip Road.Parking and visitor information kiosks are available at both trailheads. Access can also be gained from several points on the adjacent Far North Bicentennial Park.
