What is dispersed camping?

Dispersed camping is primitive camping on public land outside of developed campgrounds. There are no facilities — no toilets (usually), no water, no trash service, no marked sites. You may camp anywhere within the area, usually for free, subject to the agency's rules below. Pack everything out, follow Leave No Trace, and check current conditions with the land manager before you go.

Pawnee National Grassland is 193,000 acres of shortgrass prairie under USFS management. Dispersed camping is allowed across most of the grassland subject to USFS rules: stay on previously-used sites where present, set back 100+ feet from roads and water, follow the MVUM for motor access, observe the 14-day stay limit. Famous for the Pawnee Buttes and as one of the country's top shortgrass-prairie birding sites.

Fire restrictions change daily. We don't publish a static fire-allowed claim — check the current order before any campfire, stove, or smoking.

  • Commercial / film permits required

Filming, photography for hire, guiding, and other commercial activities require a separate permit from the agency. Personal recreational use does not.

About

Free dispersed camping across the 193,000-acre Pawnee National Grassland in northeast Colorado, managed by the USFS Pawnee Ranger District (part of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests). Dispersed camping is allowed across most of the grassland — except in designated closed areas and within 100 feet of any road or water source. No facilities. The Crow Valley Family Campground (developed, fee) is nearby for those wanting water and toilets. The grassland is famous for the Pawnee Buttes (eroded sandstone formations visible for miles) and as one of the premier shortgrass-prairie birding destinations in the country. Pack everything out — there is no trash service. Cell coverage is poor. 14-day stay limit per USFS rules.
