What is dispersed camping?

Dispersed camping is primitive camping on public land outside of developed campgrounds. There are no facilities — no toilets (usually), no water, no trash service, no marked sites. You may camp anywhere within the area, usually for free, subject to the agency's rules below. Pack everything out, follow Leave No Trace, and check current conditions with the land manager before you go.

Free 3-site dispersed camp behind dredge piles on the Salmon-Challis NF Yankee Fork RD. Vault toilet; high-clearance access. 14-day stay.

Fire restrictions change daily. We don't publish a static fire-allowed claim — check the current order before any campfire, stove, or smoking.

Rules at this site change without notice. Fire restrictions, closures, permit requirements, and stay limits are set by the managing agency and can change daily. You are responsible for compliance. Camping on tribal, private, military, or closed lands is prohibited and is your responsibility to avoid.

About

Per the Salmon-Challis NF recreation site page: "about 3 dispersed campsites" set in the timber behind the dredge piles in the historic Yankee Fork mining district. Close to dredge pond fishing. Vault toilet on site; no potable water. The access road (FR-013) is narrow and rough — high-clearance vehicles are recommended. The Salmon-Challis NF publishes a 14-day stay limit for all camping outside the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness; baseline forest dispersed allows camping up to 300 ft from an open road. Check the Salmon-Challis alerts page for current fire restrictions; central Idaho has been moving to Stage 1 in recent fire seasons.
