About

Horsetooth Reservoir is located in the foothills west of Fort Collins and has 1,900 acres of water. It is popular for a lot of things. The Bureau of Reclamation and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District operate the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, which includes this 6.5-mile reservoir. The purpose of the project is to divert water from the west slope to the east slope for drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower generation. The Bureau of Reclamation is solely responsible for generating power. The agencies manage water levels for irrigation, municipal, and industry use. Larimer County Natural Resources manages recreation.
