You can go between the beach and the trails at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, which is a park with both the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. The protected shoreline has a visitor center and other facilities that attract birders and photographers. The park is popular for surf fishing and four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed during the summer. On this tip of Pleasure Island, visitors will find a state aquarium, a Civil War-era historic site and a boating ramp.
