About

The Childs Power Plant was built in 1908. The water of Fossil Creek had been diverted by pipes and flumes for more than 90 years to power the hydroelectric plants. Fossil Creek had been reduced to a trickle, compared with the normal flow of one million gallons per hour, after the current owner of the plants agreed to decommission them. The area is a very popular dispersed camping area. The old power plant buildings are on the edge of the Verde River. The ruins of the Verde Hot Springs can be reached by a short hike upstream.
