About

The United States Army developed Camp Hale as a winter warfare training center during World War II. The camp was located here because of the natural features. The war broke out and this valley was served by both a federal highway and a railroad. The large open valley had enough room for the camp, which included more than 1,000 buildings and structures. There is a self-guided tour that takes you around Camp Hale. Each stop has a sign that tells the history of that area. There is an interpretive site just off Highway 24 marked by stone pillars at the main entrance to Camp Hale.
