About This Trail

Tower Fall is a waterfall in the Tower-Roosevelt region of the park. The waterfall on Tower Creek was named after members of the 1870 Washburn expedition. One member objected to the name of the object, saying that it violated their agreement to name objects for their friends. He claimed the name was in reference to a member of the group. The name was changed and the names "Tower Creek" and "Tower Falls" were applied. The waterfall plunges as a water column until it crashes onto the rocks. In the spring of 1986, a boulder was perched on the lip of the falls, and without witnesses, it plummeted to the bottom. The basalt formation that makes up the walls of the gorge has been cut through by Tower Creek. The minarets or towers are sculpted from basalt.
