About

Stretching across 3.8 million acres from the Canadian border to Goat Rocks along the eastern Cascades, Okanogan-Wenatchee spans lush alpine forests to shrub-steppe, creating one of the most geographically diverse forests in the nation. Eight wilderness areas protect over 1.6 million acres, including the Pasayten Wilderness (531,000 acres), Glacier Peak, Alpine Lakes, and Lake Chelan-Sawtooth. The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the length of the forest for over 250 miles.\n\nThe Enchantments, a chain of alpine lakes in the Stuart Range above Leavenworth, are so popular that permits are distributed by lottery. Major ski areas at Stevens Pass, Mission Ridge, and Leavenworth draw winter visitors. Lake Chelan provides boat access to the remote community of Stehekin and the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness.\n\nThe forest manages critical habitat for grizzly bears, gray wolves, lynx, wolverines, and threatened bull trout across some of the wildest remaining landscapes in the Cascades. World-class rock climbing at Peshastin Pinnacles and Index complements the forest's extensive trail system.
