About

Blanketing 1.53 million acres of Wisconsin's iconic Northwoods across two units, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest contains over 2,100 lakes, 1,200 miles of cold-water trout streams, and old-growth hemlock and hardwood stands that shelter timber wolves, black bears, bald eagles, and one of the southernmost breeding loon populations. The landscape was shaped by glacial activity, leaving kettles, moraines, and outwash plains covered in a rich mosaic of northern hardwoods, pine barrens, and spruce bogs.\n\nThe forest is internationally renowned for the CAMBA mountain biking trail system with over 300 miles of singletrack, and hosts the annual Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival. The North Country National Scenic Trail winds for over 60 miles through the forest. Paddlers can explore the Namekagon River, a National Wild and Scenic River that is part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.\n\nYear-round recreation includes the American Birkebeiner, the largest cross-country ski race in North America, held on the Birkebeiner Trail each February. The forest also offers exceptional hunting, mushroom foraging, and wild blueberry picking in season. Campgrounds range from developed lakeside facilities to remote dispersed sites accessible only by canoe.
