About This Trail
The stairs at the trailhead have been closed due to safety concerns. $5 entrance fee trail leads to El Vado and Heron Lake state parks. The description is from the south. Moderate trail is well marked but not always maintained. It's very diverse and scenic with a variety of forest types. The best time to hike is when there is no snow or ice. The gate at the north edge of the campground is locked in the fall and winter. The suspension footbridge over the Chama River is a feature on this hike.
